Cooperative Studies Overview
New mandates under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act to end overfishing and rebuild overfished fisheries, minimize bycatch, identify and protect essential fish habitat, and minimize adverse economic impacts to fishing communities have increased the need for more and better scientific information. The fishing industry can help managers to meet these demands through cooperative data collection and research, and cooperative studies have become increasingly common over the last several years. Why do some cooperative efforts succeed while others fail? Discussion about what it takes to make cooperation successful, what cooperative studies can and cannot accomplish, and how various fishery interest groups respond to this subject begins here.
